Model and optional voice downloads, purchases, user-directed exports or Share actions, and an Ask question you explicitly hand to DuckDuckGo can still use a connection. The LFM revision identifies the distributed bundle, not a cryptographic mapping to separate source weights, and no conversion or cryptographic mapping from the Kokoro base model to its deployment files is claimed. A request contains no writing, dictated audio, screenshot, transcript, or saved app content. Hugging Face may process CoarseLocation, OtherDiagnosticData, and ProductInteraction, with linked=true, tracking=false, for AppFunctionality, Analytics, and Other; Studio AM receives none of that provider data, analytics, or tracking. What can Better Writing do that Writing Tools can’t?
Writing Tools is a system feature: pop it open, get a proofread or a rewrite, move on. That is genuinely useful, and for a one-off fix it’s hard to beat. Better Writing trades that everywhere-at-once convenience for depth in one place. Depending on the device it may use Apple’s model or a downloaded local model, with product features built around that runtime:
- A word-level diff. Every edit shows the real word changes, not a vague “here’s a cleaner version.” You see the fix, so next time you can make it yourself.

When is Apple’s Writing Tools the better call?
Often. It’s free, it ships with the phone, and it works in Mail, Notes, Messages, and most third-party apps without installing anything. If you want to fix a sentence right where you’re typing it and never think about it again, that convenience is real and Better Writing does not replace it. For a quick, in-place proofread across your whole system, reach for the built-in tool.
Writing Tools also does things Better Writing does not try to mirror exactly, including system-level summaries, key points, and list or table transformations. Better Writing instead centers English rewriting, grounded drafts and replies, and coaching from saved work. Different jobs.
When does a dedicated editor earn its place?
When you’re trying to get better, not just get fixed. If English is a second language, or you write things that matter and want to understand the correction instead of blindly accepting it, the diff, the persistent style rules, and the progress view do work a general system feature isn’t built to do.
