Why “sound natural” is a different problem from “fix grammar”
Grammar and naturalness are two different things. A sentence can be perfectly grammatical and still sound wrong to a native ear: too formal, too literal, translated word-for-word from your first language. “I want to ask you about the possibility of…” is correct. It’s also stiff. A fluent writer just says “Could we talk about…”
For most non-native speakers, the gap you feel is that second one: the sentence is right, but it doesn’t sound like how people write. Better Writing’s Natural style is aimed at that gap, reshaping correct-but-stiff English into something more idiomatic while aiming to preserve what you meant.
What it looks like in a work email
Say you’re messaging a colleague: “I am writing to inform you that I will not be able to attend the meeting tomorrow due to a personal reason.” Grammatical. Also robotic. Correct it with Natural selected, then inspect whether the suggested wording fits the moment.
Or take a line in a job application: “I have a strong passion and I am very interested to work at your company.” A correction can fix interested in working, while Formal can aim for a professional register without inventing achievements or commitments.
The boundary is grounded input rather than a blank prompt. Rewrite improves text you supplied and is built to reject unsupported details. Draft can organize rough notes you provide into an email, message, paragraphs, or an outline. Reply can draft from a conversation screenshot after you confirm the locally recognized transcript. Those are broader than a sentence correction, but they are not permission to trust invented achievements or facts. Review the result before using it.
General AI writer vs. sentence editor: which do you actually want?
There are two kinds of tool here, and they solve different problems:

If you want your own sentence improved, your supplied notes organized, or a reply grounded in a conversation you confirm (while seeing the actual edits and practicing recurring patterns), Better Writing is the closer fit.
Does it help me learn, or just fix it for me?
This is the part most tools skip. Every edit shows a word-level diff, the exact words removed and added, so you see interested to become interested in, not a vague “improved clarity.” That repetition is how the fix eventually sticks.
It also keeps progress tracking: the correction categories that recur in your edits, shown as patterns and recent trends. It’s the same idea as the grammar guide we publish, the mistakes non-native speakers hit most, but grounded in your own sentences. Prepositions, articles, verb tense: you can see which categories appear in your writing, without a promise that they will automatically shrink.
Is my writing kept private?
The AI path is local by design. Editing, coaching, screenshot text recognition, and Ask Your Writing run on-device after compatible model setup. Better Writing has no Studio AM account or AI server, no ads or third-party tracking, and no writing or analytics is transmitted to Studio AM. Editing works in airplane mode once the model is ready.
The network boundaries are explicit. Saved writing and correction-review progress stay local unless you enable optional private iCloud sync. Model and optional natural-voice downloads and purchases require a connection. Exports and Share actions send content only to the destination you choose. If Ask Your Writing cannot answer from saved history, it offers a DuckDuckGo search and sends the exact declined question only after you tap Search the web.
The current source requests optional fixed files directly from Hugging Face: Gemma from litert-community/gemma-4-E2B-it-litert-lm revision 6e5c4f1e395deb959c494953478fa5cec4b8008f; the LFM deployment bundle from LiquidAI/LeapBundles revision e25183d6d4afe9cc0364c6330064d0744be5b5ec; and Natural Voice deployment files from mweinbach/Kokoro-82M-Swift revision 98623f832fc74ac3e2eaf2074171af7ac364b183, with base-model attribution to hexgrad/Kokoro-82M. The LFM revision is bundle provenance, not a cryptographic mapping to separate source weights; no conversion or cryptographic mapping from the Kokoro base model to its deployment files is claimed. A request contains no writing, dictated audio, screenshot, transcript, or saved app content. Hugging Face may process CoarseLocation, OtherDiagnosticData, and ProductInteraction, with linked=true, tracking=false, for AppFunctionality, Analytics, and Other; Studio AM receives none of that provider data, analytics, or tracking. The hardware trade-offs are also specific. Better Writing requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 on iPhone and iPad, or macOS 26 on an Apple-silicon Mac. It uses Apple’s built-in model where available. Other supported devices may use a lighter local model of about 0.9 GB with at least 3.5 GB of physical memory, or an enhanced model of about 2.6 GB with at least 5.5 GB. A device below the downloaded-model memory floor needs Apple’s compatible runtime. Compatibility depends on memory and the available model runtime, not a rough device-generation promise.
There is no permanent free tier for fresh writing work. Eligible new subscribers may receive a 3-day trial on either plan; Apple shows eligibility, the current local billed amount, renewal period, and terms before purchase. Prices and offers can change. The retired lifetime purchase is restore-only. If access ends, saved sessions remain readable, searchable, copyable, individually deletable, and exportable as Markdown or versioned JSON; fresh edits, drafts, replies, coaching, practice, reminders, and model work require active access.
